Home upkeep in Lathrup Village, four visits a year.

Lathrup Village was laid out on purpose, masonry houses on curved streets, built so that no two on a block look alike. Four visits a year, the small jobs handled, from $— a month.

Louise Lathrup Kelley bought a 1,000-acre tract in 1923 and held it to strict standards, masonry construction first among them. Attached garages and cost minimums kept the quality up. The village incorporated in 1953, the first incorporated community in Southfield Township, and today Southfield surrounds it on every side. The historic district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1998 and covers about 1,200 properties, mostly Colonial Revival and Tudor, with ranches from the same half century mixed in. Its streets follow a geometric plan woven with curves, circling octagonal and circular focal points and a string of small triangular parks. The Annie Lathrup School, built in 1926, is the city's only historical landmark. On a stone or brick front, an overflow stain from a full gutter shows fast and does not fade on its own.
